Hello and welcome to another awesome Buy Ukulele post. Today, we’re gonna show you the different ukulele notes within three different ukelele tunings. We found this awesome chart at ezfolk.com and we think this will help all of us ukulele learners understand the notation a bit easier. So all credits for this chart goes to ezfolk.com. Thank you!
Here’s the ukulele notes chart: Enjoy!
Did that chart make sense? Looking at the chart above, the standard tuning for most ukuleles would be the one in the middle – the GCEA tuning.
If you have any thoughts about this chart or if you see anything that should be corrected with the ukulele notes chart, please feel free to share them in the comments section below. Oh! And if you also want to add more information about ukulele notes, please also do so in the comments section.

Ukelele Tuning is a requirement if you want to start playing your ukulele. It should be pretty obvious, as to other stringed instruments, that you cannot play your ukelele chords right if your uke is out of tune. The good news is, it’s fairly easy to tune your ukulele. All you need is a good ear to listen and remember a few ukulele notes and your fingers to finish the job. Once your ukulele is in tune, you’ll be ready to play to your heart’s content.
Ukelele Tuning to Itself
When you don’t have your electric ukelele tuner, tuning gadgets or don’t have access to your computer to research the sound, you need to tune your ukulele by ear. There are different ways you can do this. But basically, the biggest key is that you need to have 1 string in tune and then you gradually tune the rest of the strings accordingly, based on that “in tune” string. For example, let’s say the third string, which is the E string, is your “in tune” string.
Step 1. The 3rd fret of the e string is the G note, which means that when you press the open g string, it should sound like the third fret of the e string. Open G (uppermost string) means you don’t press any thing on that string, hence the word “open”. Just pluck that string without any fretting and that is your open G. That string, the open G, should sound like the third fret of the E string. Since the Estring is your base string, or your “in tune” string, slowly adjust the G string knob/tuner to match the 3rd fret E string sound. Check the diagram below .
Step 2. So far, the G and the E strings are already in tune. Let’s now move on to the A string (bottom string). The 2nd fret of the G string (not the bikini) should produce the A note. Using our process in Step 1, the open A string should match the sound of the 2nd fret G string, right? Good. Slowly and carefully adjust the A string tuner to match the 2nd fret of the G string. Once they sound the same, you already have 3 strings in tune. The E, G and A strings. One more!
Step 3. We only have the C string (2nd string from the top) left to tune. We’re now gonna use our now in-tune A string to get our C string sounding right. The 3rd fret of the A string should give us a C. So, the goal is to make our open C match the 3rd fret of the A string. Same sound, but 1 octave lower. Adjust your C string tuner until it matches the 3rd fret of the A string.
And there you have it!
You have now tuned your ukulele!

With these different options, we hope that ukelele tuning will finally be a breeze for you. Now get that baby and start tuning!

- Top Ten Guitar Riffs for Ukulele Roundup – I had fun putting this list together and people seem to have enjoyed it so I’ve decided to do 20 10 in the near future. If you’ve got any suggestions, leave a comment and I’ll see what I can do. For the new riff list, how about Something by the Beatles? I just play it as open, C, open, C7, Cmaj7, C, but I’m sure you could come up with something much more interesting.
- Christmas Ukulele: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas – This is one of my all time favourite Christmas songs. A huge number of people have done this song but my favourites are Coldplay’s (in the video) and Patsy Monteleone’s version on MUD. The chords in my version are loosely based on Patsy’s version and, gosh, there are a lot of chords in it.

Buy Ukulele was at the NAMM Show 2012 yesterday (January 21,2012) at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim CA. NAMM stands for National Association of Music Merchants. It’s an annual event where musical instruments and gear are showcased to members of the music industry. Buy Ukulele was fortunate enough to get a pass for the event and attend the show.
If you are a music fan or play any musical instrument, hen t the NAMM show is be your candy store and yes, you are the proverbial kid. Pretty much all instrument/gear brands are present at the show – Gibson, Fender, Marshall amplifiers, microphones, Ibanez guitars and all the drums and accessories you can think of.
And…
Of course, ukuleles were also showcased at the event. There were at least5 booths that featured a variety of unique ukuleles – from soprano to tenor ukuleles. You name it, they got it. There were cool ukulele players hanging out at the booths while other musicians browsed through the catalogs and displays, lookung to buy ukuleles and ukulele gear. I saw the Lanikai ukulele booth and there were ukulele performers playing there.
Here is one of them.
Look at how awesome he plays those ukelele chords. Amazing how he strikes those ukulele notes in a very free-wheeling but accurate style.
Overall it was an amazing experience. It was a lot of music in one room – one big room. It felt so overwhelming to be in a building filled with music lovers, especially ukulele afficionados playing, talking and having fun at the event.
If you want to buy ukuleles, you should check out next year’s NAMM show in Anaheim. However, you have to be a NAMM member to be able to get an invite so click here for info on how to become a NAMM member.

Hello Buy Ukulele readers! Hope you’re all having a great week thus far. Quick question. Do you have UAS? According to ukulele owners, when you buy your first ukulele, there is a big tendency of you getting what is known as the “Ukulele Aquisition Syndrome” or simply UAS. It’s when you can’t help but want more ukuleles and ukulele gear. You start looking at different ukuleles and go to different guitar shops to find new gear like ukulele strings and capos. It can be an expensive situation, but you get to really enjoy it if you learn how to budget and balance your UAS.
If you’re on a budget, or not sure yet about your commitment to playing the ukulele, you can go for the least expensive ukuleles for now. The good thing about cheap ukuleles is of course, the price. It’s affordable and you can probably buy it at any guitar or music store near you. You will be able to play your ukelele chords with a decent sound and see if it is something you would enjoy. The not so good thing about buying a cheap ukulele is the quality of the sound. Like i said, it can still produce a decent sound but if you’re looking for good quality, cleaner sounds, you probably won’t get it with a cheap ukulele as the strings easily stretch, affecting the vibrating quality they make when you pluck or strum them.
Speaking of strings, I want to give you some information about them. For those of you who are on a budget and would just want to start off with a “budget-friendly” ukulele, the most affordable or the least expensive way to improve your ukulele’s sound is to change the strings. if you’re looking for good quality strings, make sure you look for these 2 barnds – Aquila or Worth. They are basically the gold standard when it comes to ukulele strings. They are more durable and don’t stretch easily, giving your ukulele a better and cleaner sound.
Since there are different types of ukuleles (soprano, concert, tenor, baritone), different strings are also required. So when buying your new set of strings, make sure to tell the store or seller what kind of ukulele you have (We’ll discuss about the different types of ukuleles on another post).
Quick Ukulele Vocabulary Lesson:
Luthier – A luthier is a person who makes and fixes stringed instruments such as violins, guitars and of course, ukuleles. The word “Luthier” came from the french word “lute’, meaning maker and fixer of stringed instruments. If you have any trouble with your ukulele, or you would want some help with attaching the strings to your ukulele, you can certainly go to a luthier and ask for his/her help. you can just search it on Google or Yelp and find a luthier near you.
Keep this piece of information in mind when you buy ukulele gear or looking to get your first ukulele. Happy playing!

Welcome!
If you’re reading this right now, then you most probably already have an idea what a ukulele is. But for the few who also visit the site that have no clue what we’re talking about, or for beginners who want to learn about this amazing instrument, allow me to give you a little background about the ukulele.

Basically, a ukulele looks like a guitar, but smaller. And while a guitar has 6 strings (some guitars have 12), a ukulele has 4.
If you’ve seen some hawaiian movies or videos, you’ve probably seen the ukulele being played more often than not. It baiscally hails from the guitar family. According to history, the ukulele was brought to Hawaii by Portugese immigrants during the 19th century and has obviously made its way up to this generation.
Spelling
The term “ukulele” is often misspelled. Some spell it with an “e” as in “ukelele” while others go with “ukalele” or even “ukolele”. Technically, it should be spelled with a “u” as in “ukulele” but for the sake of the relatively high number of misspellers, we’ll sometimes use “ukElele” so as not to alienate the huge number of “ukelele’ spellers out there. Just ukelele though.
A lot of people enjoy listening to ukuleles because of its light, relaxing sound. You can just imagine yourself in Hawaii, sitting on the beach with a pinacolada in hand, while a Hawaiian musician strums different ukelele chords. That’s some relaxing music.
You’ve probably also seen ukuleles used in movies. if you’ve seen the movie The Jerk starring Steve Martin, then you’d have seen him playing the ukulele while singing to his girl on the beach. If you haven’t seen it yet, just click the link above and check it out. Cool song! Paul McCartney also used the ukulele to play George Harrison’s Something during one of his concerts.
Here at Buy Ukulele, we’ll also talk about ukelele tuning, what a ukelele tuner is, and the different chords used when playing the ukulele. It really is fun playing the ukulele. Whether you’re trying a new instrument, learning the chords or song to play to a crush of yours, or simply playing with friends, you’ll find and learn new things about this amazing instrument.
So again, welcome to Buy Ukulele and let’s start playing!
